Two Cents - Free Speech

Written by Al Haskins

The badly misnamed campaign finance bill, the DISCLOSE ACT, will strangle the voice of the AFA and other pro-life and pro-family organizations during election campaigns, right at the time our voices most need to be heard.  President Obama and the Democrats have already pushed this bill through the House, and will push it through the Senate in the next few days unless we intervene. Although the bill will muzzle the voice of pro-family groups, Democrats carved out a special exemption for unions, the Sierra Club and the AARP, so the rules won't apply to them. And the bill will go into effect just 30 days after it is signed by President Obama, just in time to silence our message before the fall elections. To make sure it can't be challenged in court prior to November, the bill expressly prohibits expedited judicial review.  The Democrats know this bill is unconstitutional and will eventually be overturned by the courts. They don't care as long as it will help them this November. In fact, Congressman Hank Johnson (D-GA) admitted on the House floor that the purpose of the bill is explicitly partisan. He said that unless the DISCLOSE Act passes, "we'll see more Republicans getting elected." The president and the Democrats don't want a level playing field this fall; they want one tilted steeply in their favor.

Al Goes To The Races

Written by Al Haskins
Al Goes To The Races

My daughter, Natalie and I were on location at the Charlotte Motor Speedway during the Coca Cola 600.  We had the privilege of being at the “drivers meeting.”

During the 20-minute meeting, dignitaries were introduced and for about a minute the drivers were instructed on what they could or couldn’t do during the race.  They really looked bored because they already knew the rules.  I met and talked with former NASCAR DRIVER and TV announcer, Ned Jarrett.  Also at the meeting was Speaker of the House, Joe Hackney who was the “Honorary Starter.”

Road Signs

Written by Al Haskins

Does someone in Rocky Mount have some pull in Washington D.C.? Don’t get me wrong I like Rocky Mount, the city on the rise. I was traveling on I-95 north of Richmond, Virginia, saw a road sign, 120 miles to Rocky Mount. Saw another one 90 miles from Rocky Mount, another one, another one, and them one said 60 miles from Rocky Mount. Then finally 15 miles from Roanoke Rapids, I saw a sign that read 15 miles from Roanoke Rapids and Weldon. Then I saw one that read, nine miles from Roanoke Rapids.

Back Taxes

Written by Al Haskins

Did you see the unpaid taxes that have not been paid in your local paper?

Nearly one million dollars in taxes have not been paid in Halifax County as of April 28th 2010. This includes individuals and business. Nearly one million dollars has not been paid, what could the county and towns do with that money?
